Hey guys, here's a moment from 28 years ago this week on February 8, 1971
Pedro Morales wins the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship
It was February 8, 1971 in Madison Square Garden
Ivan Koloff was the champion after he ended Brauno Sammartino's nearly 8 year run as WWWF World Heavyweight Champion
However, just 3 weeks later, Pedro Morales challenged Koloff, and on that night, he won the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship for the very 1st time making the 1st Latin American to ever hold the World Title in the WWWF/WWE ending Koloff's Reign of just 3 weeks
Pedro would go on to hold the title for 146 weeks and 5 days which is almost 3 years to be exact
and then, 33 years and 1 week later, the late Eddie Guerrero would hold on to that same covenant prize @ No Way Out and become the 2nd Latin American to hold that title.
and now, 38 years later, both Morales and Koloff are retired from the ring.
after retirement from the ring, Morales became a commentator for WWF's Spanish-language TV programming and he was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in 1995.
and as for Ivan Koloff whose real name is James Parras, the French-Canadian-American is now living in Winterville, NC with his wife, Renae and has four adult children.
He remains active in various charities (he was known away from the ring as a nice easygoing person despite his vicious bad guy image). His book, titled Is That Wrestling Fake? The Bare Facts, has been recently released.
He also became a born again Christian in 1995. He travels to churches to share his testimony.
and as for the title now known as the WWE Heavyweight Championship, it is now in the hands of Adam Copeland, better known as Edge.
